Paoli Fire & Rescue provides fire prevention to the community schools, takes part in the Crusade For Children and provides the towns 4th of July fireworks display.
Department History: In 1894 a devastating fire on the southeast section of the Paoli square prompted several town leaders to formally organize the first fire department in the town of Paoli. Many fires had destroyed portions of the town square in previous years however this fire was particularly devastating. Prior to the great fire of 1894 bucket brigades were organized to fight fires which broke out in town. Among the devastation town leaders gathered to formulate a plan. They gathered donations totaling $5000 dollars to fund the first organized fire department. Paoli’s town board granted a charter for the Paoli water works company on November 2, 1894 to provide water to the town for fire suppression. In January of 1895 Samuel Braxton was named fire chief of Paoli’s first fire department. The town board provided $75 to purchase a hose cart which was the department’s first fire apparatus. An ordinance was passed for the installation of seven fire plugs to provide fire protection for the downtown area. Two plugs where located on North Gospel Street and one each at the four intersections on the square. The department has experienced many changes over the years but has continued it’s a tradition of dedication to the community.
